We interrupt this program to bring you this special announcement...
Y'all. The cherry blossoms are BLOOMING! And I mean big, beautiful, bountiful blossoms (love me some good alliteration). The area surrounding the Tidal Basin and adjacent monuments is stunning right now with all those trees in bloom.
This is one of my absolute favorite things about living in our nation's capital. If you don't live here, or have never seen them, this post may just convince you to make a special trip next year (or this weekend if you're close!). The cherry blossoms are kind of a big deal around here, and catching them at their "peak bloom" can be a somewhat tricky thing since they're so weather-dependent. "They" (the predictors of peak bloom times) kept pushing the bloom date back this year because of the extended cold spell we've had recently, so anticipation was high. But they're here, and I can't get enough of them.
In case you can't come see them yourself this year, have no fear, because I had a chance to take a few photos of them yesterday morning before heading to work. The light was un.be.lievable. Seeing all these trees with their delicate pink and white blossoms took my breath away. I think I smiled the whole time I was snapping away. So today I thought I'd let the photos do the talking and I'll get back to my regularly scheduled blog posts tomorrow...
I present to you, the cherry blossoms of 2013...
Beautiful.
P.S. I shot these using my Canon Rebel XTi DSLR with a 50mm fixed lens. It's perfect for this kind of photography. Though I'm not a professional photographer, I'm thinking of maybe writing up a post on some novice tips for shooting photos like this...anyone interested?
I grew up in Virginia and my brother and sister currently live in D.C. Oh how I miss the cherry blossoms! Thanks for posting these pictures...they are great!

"Washington D.C.'s cherry blossoms are a breathtaking sight to behold, marking the arrival of spring with their delicate pink and white petals. The annual blooming of these iconic trees around the Tidal Basin draws visitors from around the world, offering a picturesque backdrop for strolling, picnicking, and photography. The beauty and symbolism of the cherry blossoms serve as a reminder of nature's resilience and the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan, who gifted the trees over a century ago. A visit to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom is a must-do experience for anyone visiting the nation's capital."
