DIY Rustic Wood Stump Cake Stand

Way back in August, I got an email from my father-in-law asking me if I wanted him to save some wood from a dogwood tree he had to cut down for a construction project. He remembered from this post that I had an interest in making a cake stand out of wood from the great outdoors and thought that this would be perfect for it. Isn't that thoughtful? Of course I said yes immediately.

So the last time we visited my husband's family, I got to work on making the cake stand. I sanded down and evened out the pieces. He had done the quick and dirty cutting with a chain saw, so all I had to do was the finishing touches :). Here's what I started with:

All I did was use a belt sander to smooth out the surface of the piece that was going to go on top, then trimmed off the bottom of the stump (for the base) with a miter saw so it would sit flat. I didn't take any photos (sorry!) since I was busy trying to not sand or cut off my hand during this part.

To attach the top to the bottom, I just slathered on some wood glue and laid something heavy on top of it while it dried. It's not a huge cake stand, so I figure wood glue should hold pretty well.

Pretty simple, huh?

Now I have myself a rustic wood stump cake stand. Yippee! I love the dogwood bark and color of the wood. I should probably seal it, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. I did have some time to enjoy styling it up though!

Does having this give me a good excuse to make a cake now? I think so! That's a way better use for it than a flower stand ;).

I'm thinking it would be real cute to make a set of three of these in different heights and use them at a party to hold tasty treats. What do you think? I might have to go on a hunt for some more wood!
